For clients with type 2 diabetes who are not on mealtime insulin, gram-level carbohydrate counting has no guideline requirement behind it and no demonstrated glycemic payoff. A 2025 meta-analysis across six studies and 966 adults found basic carb counting was not effective in type 2. What it reliably does is make eating feel like arithmetic.

This handout teaches the plate instead. Nine-inch plate, half non-starchy vegetables, quarter protein, quarter carbohydrate — and then explains the mechanism most diabetes education leaves out: why fat slows gastric emptying, why protein drives the insulin response, why viscous fiber blunts absorption, and why the same slice of bread behaves differently depending on what arrives with it. It includes food sequencing, worked plate examples with real meals, and a plain explanation of who genuinely does need to count.

Four pages in Word. Three client-facing plus a practitioner page you remove, carrying the ADA Standards of Care 2026 positions, the plate-method trial evidence, and two cautions on the mechanism that keep you from overclaiming.

Unbranded, with a practice name placeholder in the header. Fully editable .docx. Written by Kristen Spang, MS RDN LD.
